This is my first two week look ahead of the New Year. First semester is coming to a close at the end of the week. It’s hard to believe we are already at the midpoint of the school year. We often make resolutions pertaining to improving our physical health and bringing up grades, in the New Year. It might be a good idea to look at our overall health (physical and mental) when looking at goals. At LHS, we have recognized that there is increased pressure and stress on our students in recent years. This stress can manifest itself in many different ways. Most times, the stress that we all deal with is normal and manageable. However, there are also many individuals who are dealing with more than just typical stress and pressure. Often times, those students are dealing with anxiety, depression, or another form of mental illness. We want to help to bring awareness to mental health concerns, let students know that there is help available if they need it, and work to debunk the stigma often associated with mental illness.
In December, the SHINE Initiative came in to present to all of our students. There was positive feedback, so we wanted to be sure to open it up to the community. On Wednesday, January 25 at 6:45 pm, the SHINE Initiative will be coming to LHS to present to Lunenburg parents and community members. I hope that members of the community come out to see the presentation, ask questions, and learn more about the topic of mental wellness! On January 19, members of the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office will be coming out to meet with our 9th grade students. The topic of the assembly will be internet safety and a student’s digital footprint. We will look into presentations for students in grades 10-12, but we did want a starting point. Local public access will be taping the presentation and airing it in the future. We partnered with Lunenburg Public Access because we know this is such an important topic for our students and parents. I hope you find time to watch the presentation.
